Headache-inducing spiral illusion explained

Warning: This optical illusion might give you a headache. At a glance, the swirls of tilted black-and-white squares create the perception of a spiral. Look more closely and you realize that the squares don't form a coil at all; they trace out four perfectly round, concentric circles. The cognitive dissonance between your overall impression of spiraling and your recognition of individual circles ? well, it hurts.

The illusion ? called the "intertwining illusion" ? has been a hit on social media recently, and it also happens to be the subject of study by researchers around the world. Because optical illusions harness the shift between what the eyes see and what the brain perceives, teasing out how that shift happens enables scientists to understand the inner workings of the human visual system.

When confronted with an optical illusion, or any other scene, "the visual system is interested in inferring what regions of an image are part of the same object or were made by the same process," explained Alvin Raj, a researcher in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who uses spiral illusions to study peripheral vision mechanisms.

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: NASA's Dawn mission is saying "Hasta la Vesta" with parting shots showing the asteroid Vesta, unveiled as the probe heads for the dwarf planet Ceres.

    2. Space cloud hints at planets in galactic cores
    3. Universe to be re-created ? on computer
    4. Europe eyes manned launch with China

But in this case, the visual system receives conflicting cues: Some say "circle," and some say "spiral." At the periphery of your vision, the spiral cues win.

"Peripheral vision does not accurately keep track of all the visual details, and so in some situations like in this illusion, the visual system makes errors," Raj told Life's Little Mysteries. "Notice that the illusion is strongest out in the periphery, and there is little illusion near the center of wherever you're staring in the image." [ 10 Everyday Things that Cause Brain Farts ]

It's the tilted black-and-white squares that throw off your peripheral vision, according to Mark Changizi, an evolutionary anthropologist and director of human cognition at 2AI Labs in Boise, Idaho. Although the squares actually form rings, the tilt of the squares is consistent with a spiral, he explained. The offset between the black squares in one ring with the black squares in neighboring rings also creates the perception of a spiral, as does the offset between the white squares in adjacent rings. The spiral cues beat out the circle cues. "Once your visual system guesses that they may actually be spirals at the larger scale, it actually creates a perception of it being that way," Changizi said.

But how does your brain interpret this spiraling thing?

Changizi explained that when the brain tries to make sense of complex stimuli, it "places its money" on 3-D scenes it might actually be standing in front of, rather than 2-D images that it didn't evolve to understand.

"So, when your brain decides that those rings are actually spirals, it's probably not deciding they're spirals lying within a flat surface in front of you. Instead, spirals in real life are more often due to something going in a circle while simultaneously changing in distance from you," Changizi wrote in an email. "For example, imagine walking through a tube, and there are stripes painted down the side. But instead of the stripes going straight down the tunnel, they twist around. Looking down the tunnel, you'll see spirals. If some twist in opposite directions, you'll see spirals that cut through one another (which is what's perceptually going on in this illusion)."

In other words, your brain probably thinks this is a tunnel receding into the distance, lined with two oppositely twisting candy cane-like stripes. Poor brain!

The research team led by Manel Esteller, director of the Cancer Epigenetics and Biology Program at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), professor of genetics at the University of Barcelona and ICREA researcher, has updated the latest findings in applied epigenetics in a review paper published in Nature Reviews Genetics.

There is a growing need for better biomarkers that allow early detection of human diseases, especially cancer. The markers can improve primary prevention, diagnosis and prognosis of disease. Furthermore, it is possible to predict which may be more effective treatment according to patient characteristics, which is known by the name of personalized medicine.

Genetic tests complementary to traditional methods have been used to improve the approach to various diseases, but in the last ten years Epigenetics has hardly emerged to help solve these clinical situations, as highlighted by the article. Epigenetics is the discipline for the study of the chemical changes in our genetic material and the same regulatory proteins. The most known epigenetic mark is the addition of a methyl group to the DNA.

The study notes that the last decade two tests based on the methylation of two genes, MGMT and GSTP1, have been proved vital in predicting brain tumours sensitive to the temozolomide drug and in distinguishing prostate cancer compared benign growth, respectively. Dr. Esteller points out that "the most exciting thing is that they are currently being identified new epigenetic biomarkers for predicting the performance and weaknesses of tumours at a fast pace." In this sense, the coordinator of the study cites the recent identification of epigenetic alterations in predictive genes as response to new generation drugs in leukaemia and the fact that obtaining a "picture" of the DNA methylation pattern can expose unknown tumours that previously had a very poor prognosis.

LED lights used in plant growth experiments for deep space missions

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) ? What kind of food will astronauts eat and what is the best way to grow it during deep space exploration missions? A group of plant biologists is seeking the answers as it works on one of NASA's Advanced Exploration Systems (AES) Habitation Projects at Kennedy Space Center's Space Life Sciences Laboratory.

Gioia Massa, a NASA Postdoctoral Fellow in the Surface Systems group of Kennedy's Engineering Directorate, works on this AES Habitation-related Project.

For this experiment, Massa said they looked at the responses of a red leaf lettuce called "Outredgeous" and radish plants to different light sources -- broad spectrum fluorescent lighting and solid state red and blue LED lighting.

"LED lights are efficient and versatile," Massa said. "Because of their durability and long life, they are ideal for space missions where resupply of things from Earth is limited."

According to Dr. Ray Wheeler, lead for advanced life support activities in the Engineering Directorate, using LED lights to grow plants was an idea that originated with NASA as far back as the late 1980s.

Some of the first NASA-funded tests were done at the University of Wisconsin and at Kennedy using wheat and just red LEDs. Wheeler said the wheat plants were very leggy and almost bleached out.

"Blue LEDs weren't very good back then, so using blue fluorescent lights helped correct those problems," Wheeler said. "Today's LEDs have vastly improved in their efficiency."

Dr. Matthew Mickens, a graduate of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and recipient of the NASA-sponsored Harriett G. Jenkins Predoctoral Fellowship, followed the plants' growth during his tenure at the center.

During a recent harvest of the plants, Mickens measured the plants' shoot length, the shoot diameter, total fresh mass or the weight of the plants at time of harvest, total dry mass of the edible plant matter accumulated during the growth cycle, and the leaf area index.

He used a chlorophyll meter to measure chlorophyll content. Then Mickens flash-froze some of the plants in liquid nitrogen and ground them to a powder in order to perform a new test, an adenosine triphosphate analysis, which measures stored energy in the plant tissue.

"One of the objectives of the study was to understand the effects of green light on plant growth," Mickens said.

For the test, he compared the growth responses of the lettuce and radishes grown under a treatment of red and blue LEDs, and a treatment of broad spectrum white fluorescent lamps with green light present.

"I discovered that there were considerable physiological differences between the two treatments," Mickens said.

According to Mickens, results showed darker red color under the red and blue LEDs, which indicates a higher concentration of anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant that can combat some of the effects of cosmic radiation. Additional replications of the crop cycles are currently ongoing to further confirm these observations.

"Even subtle changes in light quality can potentially increase antioxidant properties of crops such as the lettuce used here," Mickens said. "The nutritional quality of the vegetables meant to feed our astronaut explorers can be controlled by proper selection of lighting used to grow these crops during long range space missions beyond low Earth orbit."

There is evidence that supports fresh foods, such as tomatoes, blueberries and red lettuce are a good source of antioxidants, according to Wheeler.

"How they are grown and then consumed in space could have a positive impact on people's moods and could protect against radiation in closed environments," Wheeler said.

"As we learn more about different light sources we can better configure the lights to more efficiently product plants that will produce food for the crew, recycle the atmosphere and help to recycle water," Massa said.

"Ultimately, we would like to develop closed-loop bioregenerative technologies that are self-sustaining," Massa said. "Our current supplemental food production system is a step towards this future goal."

House Call: Prostate Cancer ? Signs and Symptoms | MyFOX8.com ...

Posted on: 9:58 am, September 10, 2012, by Ryan Sullivan, updated on: 10:00am, September 10, 2012

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer found in men.?

The PSA blood test is often administered to screen men for prostate cancer. Because of PSA testing, most prostate cancers are now found before they cause any symptoms.?

More: PDF: Prostate Cancer Information Sheet

Unfortunately, when prostate cancer symptoms are present, it is usually in a later stage of the disease.? The signs of prostate cancer, known as lower urinary tract symptoms, can include delayed or slowed start of urinary stream, dribbling or leakage of urine (most often after urinating), slow urinary stream, straining when urinating or not being able to empty out all of the urine, blood in the urine or semen, bone pain, and significant weight loss.?

The American Urologic Association recommends men to begin getting yearly PSA blood tests and digital rectal exams at the age of 50. It is also important for men to become aware of risk factors for prostate cancer, such as family history or being of African American ethnicity, and become educated on the risks and benefits of PSA level testing.?

In some cases, lower urinary tract symptoms and an elevated PSA level present with a benign condition, such as an infection or enlarged prostate.? Fortunately, Cone Health has an exceptional network of primary care physicians, urologists, oncologists and other related health providers dedicated to screening, properly diagnosing and treating prostate cancer in patients throughout the community.

Physician Background:

Dr. Matthew Eskridge is a urologist at Alliance Urology and a member of the Cone Health medical staff.? Dr. Eskridge is a 2003 graduate of Wake Forest University School of Medicine.? He completed his residency in urology at Medical University of South Carolina in 2006.

Phuket's 2012 Baba Wedding Ceremony by Phuket Index News

Phuket?s 2012 Baba Wedding Ceremony

On September 9th 2012, the Peranakan Association of Thailand, Ministry of Culture, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket office, Phuket Municipality, Phuket Tourist Association, Phuket Old Town Foundation and Phuket Party Network held the ?2012 Andaman Baba Wedding Ceremony?. The beautiful & colourful ancient ceremony is held in to preserve Phuket?s Baba culture and highlight the lives of the Baba-Nyonya people.

This year?s event saw the marriage of seven partners, four of which were honorary:

1. Mr.Somkieat and Dr.Sataporn Sankaosuthirak ? Phuket?s Deputy Provincial Governor and Vice President of the Red Cross.

2. Mr.Jamroen and Mrs.Wasana Thippayapongtada ? Phuket Deputy Provincial Governor and Vice President of the Red Cross.

3. Col. Nopparit and Mrs.Chaleamkwan Tawrit ? Deputy Commander of the Artillery Regiment of the 9th Surasree?s Camp, Kanchanaburi and Military Wives Association.

4. Son of Phuket Governor ? Mr.Nantharit and Mrs.Patthana Acharadecha.

Two Thai and one Chinese couple were the ceremonies other participants.

The ceremony began with a procession of the grooms; this began at the house of the Phuket Governor, used as their home for the occasion, and then moved on to Hongyok?s house, which is used as the home of the brides. This is then followed with a Pang-Tea ceremony, which follows strict ancient traditions. Throughout this ceremony music is played by the 50 year old Te-Tor-Te-Cheng band, under the direction of Dr.Narong Hongyok. As part of tradition, eight of China?s most auspicious flowers are then put on display.

The groom?s procession, together with the display of flowers, is then paraded around?Thalang Road, Krabi Road and the historic Sino-Portuguese architectured Thai-Hua Museum in Phuket Old Town. This is the when the public and tourists are given the opportunity to enjoy part of Phuket?s original culture and take some photos.

The grand finale is a wedding party for the couples at the Phuket Governor?s House.

President of Peranakan Association ? MD.Kosol Tang-U-thai said ?Thailand is a world-class country with diverse cultures and people. One of the groups of people who live in Phuket is known Baba or Peranakan, born of a Chinese father and Phuketian mother. The Phuket Baba people have inherited many traditions and one of those is to marry in the traditional Baba way, a tradition which has existed since ancient times. Two of the most important factors of a Baba wedding are the involvement of the family and the respect for elders. Baba?s marriage is not only a special event, but also a declaration and commitment to serve the Baba-Peranakan community.?

Why We Wear our Babies

The other day, I mentioned to a pregnant friend that baby-wearing is a good way to maintain and increase mothers? milk supply, and she said:

?Babywearing? Yeah, it looks like it works for some people, but I?m not into that. I?ve already worn him.? and she motioned at her belly.

While I absolutely understand that feeling, I remain a huge advocate of baby-wearing, and Boba recently posted an awesome article explaining exactly why baby wearing improves physical, emotional, and developmental health for babies and toddlers that I think everyone (parent or not!) should read.

In Strollers, Baby Wearing, and Infant Stress, the author delineates several advantages that baby wearing provides that stroller-use and over-use of car carriers and other baby devices do not offer. Over-use or inappropriate use of strollers and carseats can actually damage a baby, emotionally, developmentally, and physically, and the well documented and cited article explains just why this is so.

Oh, yes. I agree. Carseats are definitely not the Devil. There is a time and a place for the use of baby contraptions like strollers and carseats ? but the benefits of babywearing and dangers of over-use of carrying devices like strollers and ?baby buckets? are definitely overlooked or dismissed by many. This is what the Boba article, and my post are trying to raise up.

Just like my advocacy of breastfeeding, I intend to inform and empower parents, family members, friends, and parents-to-be about the facts and about my experiences ? so that I can facilitate responsible and informed decision making.

I use a stroller when I go on walks with my 17 month old, and I carry an umbrella stroller in the car in case I need to stroll him (or Abbey) on an errand or outing. But most of the time, especially during Joseph?s infancy, and for much of Abbey?s life, I have embraced baby wearing as the functional, snuggly, practical, and beneficial option that it is!

Most of my baby wearing is in an Ergo carrier, but I also love my hand made (by me!) ring sling, and my (also handmade by me) Mei Tai carrier. All of these carriers have different uses and different pros and cons to their function and features. I enjoy having all three to choose from (plus the baby wrap that I borrowed from a friend for newborn baby carrying), and there are many different comfortable and ergonomically suitable carriers for different body types, needs, and desires.

?

?

I bought an Ergo used from another mama for about $60 a little over a year ago, and It has definitely been more than worth the upfront cost! We use it on hikes, at the grocery store, at casual functions that are too large for Joseph to toddle around the whole time, and sometimes for walks around the neighborhood. The Ergo, I think, was most useful in situations where I needed Joseph to be content being worn for a long period of time ? at the grocery store, for example. And on hikes. And at functions, like a family function on base where there are lots of?people and lots of things going on.

Nursing in the Ergo was doable, but not my favorite way to baby wear and nurse while he was little. As he got?older, loosening a shoulder strap to allow him to latch on and nurse was a lot easier, so as a toddler, I think the Ergo is my favorite carrier.

I also made a ring sling with directions provided by Jan Andrea of Sleeping Baby Productions when Joseph was an infant, and I still use it to this day.?The ring sling was particularly useful while Joseph was teething. I could carry on with chores or cooking or playing with and parenting Abbey while Joseph cuddled up against my chest and snuggled away the gum pain. I found that the ring sling was also the most comfortable for both of us for baby-wearing naps, when a lay-down nap was impossible.

When he was a crawling but not yet toddling babe, I found it to be the perfect hip carry for me. Adjustable, yet sturdy and easy-in-easy out, I could?lift Joseph into the ring sling with ease when he needed to be carried, and then let him easily out when he wanted to explore.

The ring sling was awesome for nursing during church as well. With the long fabric tail, I could simply loosen the sling through the rings, let Joseph latch on, and then keep any stray peeking-out body parts covered, so that no one was distracted from the church service by my nursing.

The handmade Mei Tai (that I made with directions from Still Learning Life) was my favorite carrier while Joseph was a tiny infant. It was still chilly here in Maine when he was born, and when I sewed it (from directions found at Still Learning Life), I lined the Mei Tai with minky fabric, creating a soft, cozy, cuddly place for him to rest against my chest and stay super warm while we went out to the park for playtime, ran errands, or participated in an outdoor activity while he was still little.

I also used it a lot his first Winter- and the hood came in handy several times to keep him from getting snow on his little face. I?m looking forward to wearing Joseph in it again this winter ? both up here in Maine for Fall and Winter festivals, and also when we go to visit Grandma and Grandpa and our other family in Texas over Christmas.

The benefits that I have personally experienced by baby wearing my Silly Bears are:

?

  • closeness and maturation & regulation of mother?s milk supply
  • comfort and calm for baby during times of stress or teething pain
  • hands-free parenting of an older child
  • having hands free for chores and other work (including blogging and knitting)
  • Connectivity and inclusion of baby in activities and movement (i.e. baby experiences first-hand all the things that you do, instead of being relegated to a stroller)
  • correct physical development of baby?s head, neck, hips, and back.
  • facilitation of nursing, including nursing discreetly in places where I felt obliged to do so (i.e. church, or in someone?s home who preferred additional discretion)
  • availability of nursing on demand (i.e. I didn?t have to quit an activity with Abbey in order to nurse Joseph or make Joseph wait to nurse while I attended to Abbey?s needs)
  • Baby wearing by daddy facilitated family togetherness, inclusion of children in tasks and outings (hikes, errands, etc) and fatherly bonding.
  • Providing an alternative napping place when the opportunity for lay-down naps were unavailable.
  • efficient and comfortable traveling with two children (especially while unaccompanied!)

I think the most important things to remember about babywearing are:

  • Listening to your baby?s needs AND your own
  • babywearing to your comfort level
  • finding a carrier that is right for you
  • having several carriers available for different uses
  • carrying safely and correctly (close enough to kiss, chest to chest, no forward facing carries, etc)
  • understanding that babywearing, like all other parenting practices, is not all or nothing, and can be easily balanced with safe and appropriate stroller and carrieruse.

Shannon at The Artful Mama wrote about finding the right carrier to meet the needs of her toddler son, wearing him in a homemade woven ring sling while she was pregnant with #2?.

This Babywearing Retrospective from Lyndsay at Our Feminist {Play}school highlights the different carriers that she and her son enjoyed using during their baby-wearing days.

Kelly at Kelly Naturally had a similar experience to mine ? loving a solar veil ring sling and Ergo carriers as her favorites and wore her son comfortably to three years of age!

For nursing mamas, Lauren at HoboMama has a wonderful description with video and detailed instructions on how to nurse your little one in a Mei Tai (I have done this same trick and LOVED it). She also links to various Mei Tais available on the market and her tutorial on how to sew your own!

Jennifer at Hybrid Rasta Mama even compiled a post full of babywearing photos from around the world that is a fantastic read.

?Do you wear your baby? Why or Why not?

After reading the Boba article on Babywearing and Infant Stress, what do you feel is the most compelling benefit to baby wearing, for the child?

Does Your Business Have Workers Compensation Coverage ...

McVey InsuranceAs a business owner, you do everything you can to protect your employees from potential dangers, but do you have workers compensation protection? Most business owners understand that workers compensation is important, but did you know that if you have employees, it is required by CA ?law for most businesses to have coverage?
Workers compensation is a type of insurance coverage that protects your employees in case of injury or disease during the course of employment. Policies can provide coverage for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost income/wages
  • Rehabilitation costs
  • Death benefits
  • And more?

For anyone who is classified as an employee, it is required by law to provide them with workers compensation coverage. Employees can opt out of coverage, but if you do not offer it, you can be fined up to $2,500 a day and can face a Class D felony charge with a mandatory minimum one year prison sentence. Termination of an employee who is injured while working and/or who files a workers compensation claim is also illegal. As a rule, a company with five or more employees is mandated to purchase workers compensation insurance to cover medical expenses, permanent disability, and a portion of the injured employee?s wages.

Having workers compensation coverage can save you and your business from costly lawsuits and employee issues. Workers Compensation Insurance protects your business AND your employees, who are oftentimes a huge part of the framework of a company.

I love being outside, I love working with my hands," said Wright, wearing a straw hat to shield himself from Florida's relentless summer sun. Verde Gardens, a $17. ...

Transforming Your Life: Change Your Actions or Change Your ...

Transforming Your Life- Change Your Actions or Change Your Attitude? With life coach Marie Wetmore

Change Your Actions or Change Your Attitude? With life coach Marie Wetmore

In life coaching we often encounter a tension between two ways of improving your life: taking action versus changing your attitude and appreciating what you have.

And of course there?s no one answer. As a life coach, every session with a client is absolutely unique and every situation has its own solution.

All that being said, it?s easy for those of us that are in productivity/accomplishment driven cultures to hyper-focus on action as our mode for changing our lives.

But I think it?s fundamentally important for us to cultivate our ability to appreciate what we have.

Think of it as an ?attitude of appreciation? ? the ability to be grateful, to be mindful and present throughout the day, and to savor the little things. With an attitude of appreciation, we build a powerful foundation from which we can really appreciate the good that comes when we do take action.

In other words, when we spend all of our mental energy on taking action, we can completely miss out on experiencing the good things we create for ourselves.

Once you learn to shift your perspective and really savor the good in life, then you tap into a profound personal power that supports long-lasting, authentic happiness and well-being.

Still, sometimes there?s no substitute for seeing a problem and taking action. If there?s something you can do to improve the quality of your life, do it. But don?t forget to savor the results!

Here?s one easy life coaching exercise to help you do it:

Every evening for two weeks, write down one action you took that made your life better ? and the positive outcome you achieved. It doesn?t matter how big or small the contract, just capture something. Then answer these questions:

  • Why were you able to take this action? What helped you?
  • Why are the positive results so significant?
  • How do you feel about the results?
  • How would you feel if you had even more of this in your life?

What do you think? What?s one thing in your life you could appreciate more? What would it mean if you did that?

Want some one-on-one support from a world-class life coach? Set up a?complementary VIP discovery session with Marie! ?She coaches in her Boston area office or anywhere in the world (by phone or on Video Skype).

BE A HERO! SHARE THIS WITH SOMEONE WHO NEEDS IT.?

Joy Behar: Honey Boo Boo to be 'big fat woman'

Chris Fraticelli. / TLC

Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson

?

By Us Weekly

At 69 years old, Joy Behar should know better than to pick on a 7-year-old kid. In a Sept. 5 interview with the Huffington Post, the "View" star predicts the future is grim for "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" star Alana?Thompson, who first gained fame on the TLC reality series "Toddlers & Tiaras."?

PHOTOS: Pick a side and vote for who's right in these Hollywood feuds

"What's little Honey Boo Boo going to grow up to be? That's what I want to know?" Behar asks. "She's going to be a fat kid; she's going to grow up to be a big fat woman. She is, I can tell. She's just a kid, but you see the genetics are right there. She's going to have large boob boobs -- Honey Boobs Boobs."

PHOTOS: Best-dressed TV hosts

Alana -- known for guzzling bottles of "go-go juice," a mixture of Red Bull and Mountain Dew -- has often referred to herself and her family members as "fat" on "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo." Matriarch JuneShannon is aware of the health problems facing her family, which inspired her to initiate a weekly weight loss challenge. Though their results have been varied, they haven't stopped trying.

PHOTOS: Celebrities' beauty pageant pasts

Still, Behar argues the family has a long way to go -- especially Alana, the most outspken of the bunch. "Wait until she grows to a 400 pound woman!" Behar, who also hosts "Joy Behar: Say Anything!" on Current TV, tells the Huffington Post.

What Type of Sherman Oaks Real Estate is Right for You? Single ...

Sherman Oaks, Ca (PRWEB) August 31, 2012

When it comes to Sherman Oaks real estate, its simple to get overwhelmed by the choices. Although there are many different types of homes, the two most common designations are (1) the single family tree residence and (2) the condominium.

Before purchasing that dream home, buyers should consider all of the trade-offs, advantages and disadvantages of these two different types of real estate.

Single Family tree Residence

The single family tree residence (SFR) is what most public reckon of when buying a home ? its basically just a house. Although the exact legal definition varies from state to state, an SFR is usually defined as a stand-alone organize with its own lot. The individual owner of the property is responsible for all maintenance, insurance and fees. Most of the Sherman Oaks homes for sale are single family tree residences.

Advantages of SFR

1) Freedom: Those who own houses generally have much more freedom to adjust, customize, and renovate their property as they see fit.

2) Privacy and Space: A house may not be a private island, but its the next best thing in the San Fernando Valley. Unlike apartment or condominium income, house owners will not often be disturbed by the noise of their neighbors because there is space linking the properties.

3) Appreciation: As a general rule of thumb, single family tree residences tend to hold their value better than condominiums; but of course there are always exceptions, and it all ultimately depends on Sherman Oaks real estate market conditions.

Disadvantages of SFR

1) Less Affordable: While its splendid that single family tree residences tend to hold their value, they also tend to be more expensive than condominiums in the same neighborhood.

2) Upkeep and Maintenance: A major reason why houses can get expensive is because of the upkeep and maintenance that they require. If the washing machine breaks, the owner is responsible for fixing it. If the lawn grows out of control, the owner is responsible for controlling it.

3) Lack of Amenities: Besides the local public parks, houses usually dont have their own Olympic-sized swimming pools, tennis courts, or gyms. Some condominium complexes do offer such amenities, so it should be taken into account when searching for Sherman Oaks homes for sale.

To summarize, a single family tree residence is a splendid choice for those who want to settle down, raise a family tree, and have pets.

Condominium

A condominium or condo is a unit, within a multi-unit complex, that can be bought and individually owned. The common spaces of the complex are shared linking all of the condo owners. Unlike SFRs, one individual owner isnt responsible for the maintenance, insurance and fees of the entire complex. Condominium complexes are usually managed by some third party, such as a Homeowners Association.

Advantages of Condo

1) More Affordable Housing: Generally speaking, condos are more affordable than other types of Sherman Oaks real estate because common costs are shared.

2) Amenities: As mentioned earlier, many condominium complexes offer a range of amenities such as pools, tennis courts, and gyms. These social amenities can help to facilitate friendship and a sense of community.

3) Low Maintenance:

The condominium complex itself is usually owned and/or maintained by a third party. Its worth noting, but, that this service is provided for a monthly fee.

Disadvantages of Condo

1) Lack of Privacy: Although there are many benefits to shared ownership, privacy is typically not one of them. Those with condos should expect to run into neighbors in the halls as well as hear noises through any bordering walls, ceilings and floors.

2) Shared Amenities: Having a pool or gym at-hand is splendid, but the neighbors will also have access to these amenities. Nevertheless, some would say this is still a small price to pay; it really depends on individual budgets, tastes, and preferences.

3) Small or No Open Space: While some condos do have a yard, most of them only have a balcony. This situation can make it hard to have plants or animals.

In the end, it all comes down to preferences. There is no right or incorrect choice, and Red Blue Realty is here to help you find the right home. Contact Christopher Rosiak at Red Blue Realty today for the perfect Sherman Oaks real estate agent!

10 Gems of investment wisdom

Over the last few years, I've been posting articles on how to save money, get out of debt, save on income tax, and become wealthy. ? In this post, I will offer another quick summary on investment concepts. ?Understanding these few gems of wisdom will keep your financial life lean and healthy:

10 Gems of investment wisdom:

  1. Save while you earn ? Using direct deposit to squirrel away 15% or more of your wages into a retirement account is a painless way to save for the future
  2. Don?t touch that 401(k) or IRA ? Pillaging your retirement fund is the most damaging way to ruin your retirement years
  3. Pay down debts before investing ? It makes no sense that you invest $500 a month while paying $500 a month in interest charges
  4. Invest frugally ? Paying 2% annual fee to a financial advisor or 5.75% front load on a mutual fund or 1.5% expense ratio can decimate your investments in the long run.
  5. Invest wisely ? Dollar cost averaging, asset allocation, and invest-and-forget methods can sometimes fail, as we saw in 2008-2009 market down turn. Don?t always believe the ?experts?
  6. Know your risk tolerance ? If you gamble your family inheritance at a casino, you are a risk taker. Some investments can be just as risky. Understand the risk in investments.
  7. Don?t invest in something you don?t understand ? Some financial advisors sell you complicated stuff that you have no idea how it works. Just say, ?NO!? to these investments
  8. Have a goal in mind ? Estimate your longevity and retirement age, calculate the retirement funds and college fund needed, then start investing funds needed each pay period into retirement funds early
  9. Spend less than you earn ? This is not an investment concept, but should be heeded by all (including our Federal government). This requires a monthly budget and spending plan, and a commitment by all to stick to the budget
  10. Know thy income tax ? This is the least understood subject in most investor?s mind. Don?t buy or sell without understanding the basic income tax rules. For example, Roth conversion can be a very expensive transaction if you do it when you are earning big salary

Most of these ideas are common sense stuff, but if you are alert with these ideas, you will do well.? Good luck with your investments.

Managed Computing Business - IT Outsourcing New Cross ...

computer networking IT Outsourcing New CrossIT outsourcing is becoming increasingly well-liked presently including in the area IT Outsourcing New Cross, and this will come as no shock as outsourcing has proved itself an excellent cash preserving method. Obviously, selecting the best company is vital to profitable outsourcing. There are plenty of outsourcing organizations supplying their providers. Some are very good, some are certainly not very, but how do you find a ?perfect? outsourcer? Properly, there is certainly almost certainly no such factor as ?perfect? in such a globe, but here are a number of advices that could allow you to decide on the proper outsourcer.

Glimpse for your risk no cost offer

Whenever you make a decision to outsource a specific IT job, be it a simple internet site progress or development of difficult personalized program, you want to make your expense harmless. Usually do not retain the services of the initial business that gives its solutions, or perhaps the one that is definitely the lowest priced. Appear for that business that is certainly wanting to sign an agreement and acquire a entire fiscal accountability for that products they build. What I necessarily mean just isn?t just a refund in the event that they fail to produce the piece of program you order, but also a compensation of losses that may come from malfunction or failure in the software program. Possibilities are that an organization will present this sort of a guarantee only in the event it truly is assured regarding the quality it provides, and that?s exactly the kind of provider you?ll need.

Seem for experts
You don?t choose to believe in IT jobs which can be vital to the corporation to some bunch of amateurs proclaiming themselves IT industry experts. In fact, recognizing an expert IT outsourcing organization from the higher than outlined dabblers is not quick. The fact is always that all outsourcing businesses, regardless of how excellent they may be, will declare by themselves experts, and it?s your work to locate the one that genuinely is professional. You?ll be able to review just about every organization according to the portfolio it?s got or determined by the references it?s from its purchasers. Usually do not hesitate to go to sites that were or presently are prospects of the outsourcer and shell out added consideration to the web site of the outsourcing organization alone. Are those sites well-designed? Does every thing function perfectly and every weblink gets you into the webpage it?s meant to? Do they look artistic? Is this the type of superior you expect within the outsourcer? Answering all these thoughts is likely to make your variety method considerably a lot easier.

Retain you information and facts safe
When performing with outsourcing organizations, chances are you?ll must give information and facts which has commercial worth in your firm, and, certainly sufficient, you may not want your competitors and standard public for getting a maintain of that information. In these circumstance, ensure that you sign an NDA (nondisclosure arrangement) using the outsourcing business, and ensure that staff who?ll work on your challenge have signed the identical.

Typically, most corporations that decided to outsource a number of their enterprise features are pleased with the outcomes they acquired, and I believe that a small number of people who claim outsourcing inefficient are the types who didn?t opt for the best outsourcing company. There are lots of IT Outsourcing New Cross?outsourcers presenting their services and you simply really have to take some added care and time for you to choose the one which can make your outsourcing working experience successful.

Check Out These Great Wedding Planning Tips | Dating and ...

While you have been planning your wedding, no doubt you have come across many sources of advice for making your big day go smoothly. The tips contained in this article are simple and concise and will be very easy for you to apply. Continue reading to learn several great ideas for planning your special day.

Do not feel like you are the only one who has a tough time finding solid information about huwelijksfotograaf? . There are few things more infuriating than needing direction and not figuring out where to find it. There is so much information online, and honestly it can be very difficult finding and knowing what you can rely on. Probably just about everybody knows all too well with the internet environment. The following information and facts concerning this specific topic is well known and easily referenced.

Consider giving the children who are invited to your wedding, some amount of responsibility to keep them focused and not let them get bored. A young man can be an usher, or you can even give the kids disposable cameras to take photos. This will not only keep them entertained but also save any hurt feelings for someone who was passed over as ring boy or flower girl.

Try incorporating some old traditions and tributes into your wedding. These can be simple like ?jumping the broom?, eating a loved one?s favorite foods, hanging some antiques around the venue, wearing a loved one?s favorite color, or wearing something similar that a loved one wore on the day of their wedding.

Consider whether you need something before you order it for your wedding. Do you really need to have personalized napkins? Does each guest really need a small bottle of bubbles? Cutting costs on things that aren?t needed to have a beautiful day can help you save a lot of money in the long run.

If you are planning a destination wedding do not be afraid to ask for every discount you can find. Many hotels, restaurants and other event locations will offer discounts based off the amount of people that will be attending. This could mean cutting or increasing your guest list to accommodate, however, the savings can be worth it.

Thank your guests for attending your destination wedding with extra events, so that you can give them the trip of a lifetime. Start with a welcoming dinner at a nice restaurant on the day that they arrive, allowing them to relax and not have to worry about finding a place on their own.

Do not wait until the rehearsal to begin preparing your flower girl and ring bearer for their role. Make time with the children to practice their movements and placing during the ceremony. Children thrive on structure and teaching them early will build anticipation to do their best. Explain all the importance that they carry on this day and they will adopt a responsible attitude.

Get the most from your wedding planner by doing your homework prior to your first meeting. Follow the lead of fashion designers and stylists who create ?look books? and mood boards comprised of fabric swatches, imagery and other inspirational tidbits that can serve as a starting point for the finished product. You can include magazine clippings, photographs or even song lyrics to communicate your vision to your planner.

If you are planning an outdoor wedding you will need to consider the possibility of bad weather. If you do not have a backup plan, this could ruin your wedding and inconvenience all of your guests who are attending. Always prepare for the worst on important occasions.

If you have found your lifetime partner, and are set on saying ?I do,? then this article was the perfect read for you. It should be the most magical, most blissful day of your life, and it can be with the right advice. Planning a wedding and doing it aren?t the easiest, but hopefully, this article has helped.

A Genealogy Journal, Tracing My Italian Ancestors
http://www.delprincipefamilytree.com
Blog type: Individual family history

My mother was Corinne Del Principe Winike, her father was Gilberto Guy Del Principe. My great grandparents were Pietro Del Principe and Elvira Ciolli.

I always had an interest in our family genealogy. I am part of large Italian family; one of eight children. My parents moved out of the Chicago suburbs in 1958 and had their dream home built. My grandfather, who was by then a widower, moved in with us and lived in our home for the rest of his life. In the mid 1960?s my family converted the upstairs bedrooms into an apartment and my father?s parents moved in upstairs. How lucky were we kids, to have two grandfathers and one grandmother live with us?

In 2000 my husband, daughter, sister and I spent two weeks in Italy. It was my dream to visit the town where my ancestors came from. My mother thought our ancestors were from a town called L?Aquila so that is the town we toured on our vacation. We climbed the hills and reveled in the beauty.

We purchased souvenirs from L?Aquila and took hundreds of pictures. At the end of the day my sister and I sat on a bench in the town square and talked of our ancestors walking across these same brick pathways to do their shopping. What a sense of familiarity we felt sharing the same space, but different time, with our ancestors!

In 2010 my husband and I took a trip to Utah stopping at Salt Lake City and we went into the Family History Library. I spent a few hours researching and my head was swimming with ideas about creating a website and building a family tree. When we returned home I signed up for an account at Ancestry.com. I made my first entrees with my family names. Soon I had little leaves shaking at me, enticing me to ?click here?.

In the past two years I?ve met an astounding number of new family members that I didn?t know I had! I also discovered family members who live in Pescasseroli, Italy. It turns out that my great grandparents were born in Pescasseroli, not in L?Aquila. Darn, this could only mean one thing. A return trip to Italy would have to be scheduled.

I appreciate everyone?s help with information and photos. I welcome any new documents, photos, and comments. ?You can email me at [email?protected]

Cross Connections

Blog type: Individual family history

A bit about me and why I am geneablogging:

My 2nd great grandmother, Mary Jane (Boroff) Cross moved to the Northwest corner of Iowa with her 5 sons after the death of her husband, Basil Noah Cross in 1885.? Of the five boys, my great grandfather, Henry Cross, stayed in Clay County, Iowa where I was born and raised on a farm just a few miles from where he lived so many years ago.

I have always loved history and I was raised with a keen sense of who my immediate family was from Grandpa Henry to present.? But I wanted to know who came before, so a little over 30 years ago I started researching my family tree.

In this blog I will share that journey and the interesting people I found along the way, from the Midwest back to Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and finally England on my father?s side.? On my mother?s side the concentration is Texas, Kentucky, and North Carolina where a Texas Ranger, a Baptist preacher, a chief of police from San Antonio and quite a few Confederates join the story.

I have recently started researching my grandchildren?s paternal side which has taken me into totally new areas as my son-in-law descends from French Canadians.? So from time to time you learn of the Courchene family with their New England and Canadian roots.

This will primarily be a genealogy blog, but from time to time I may share a few of the other things that interest me.

I have a lot of questions still waiting to be answered and the research continues.? So come along with me, as I journey back into my past, one ancestor at a time.

Maybe you?re visiting this blog for the first time ? well, this where I talk about Richard J Loveday, my Great, Great grandfather.

I am the fourth generation Loveday male of this line and was fortunate enough to have been left a wonderful FamilyHistory book from my father George in 1977. Since then I have added to the wealth of knowledge about the Loveday family and continually keep looking for more.

In 1846 Richard and wife Bridget and three children, Ann, Richard and Thomas boarded the ?Royal George? in England and sailed for Port Adelaide, arriving on a cold day,? June 26th 1847.

Richard was 29 years of age on arrival and served with the British Colonial Government as a Royal Sapper & Miner for 11 years from 1847-1858.

During this period his wife, Bridget Ann died of cancer on July 15th 1852 and he subsequently married Susannah Sarah Sadgrove on May 5th, 1853. Six children were born of this marriage; Alice Susannah, Henry George Sadgrove, Alexander William, Emily Agnes, Frances Jane, Ernest Alfred.

On the 1st. January 1859, when a pensioner of Royal Sappers & Miners, he was a appointed to Post Lithographer, 1st Class, in the Department of Survey in the State Government of South Australia, established 1854, and later he was transferred to Field Staff of Department of survey as a Surveyor on January 1st.1860.

In the year 1868, R.J.Loveday, Surveyor was domiciled in the District of Hindmarsh, ie. Reedbeds (Findon) where the last five of his children of the second marriage, were born. (Adelaide Almanac)

It is surmised that about this time ? 1875-80 ? R.J.Loveday moved to Salisbury where he remained until his death on December 15th 1883. The Medical Report shows the cause of death to be Bright?s disease

He was buried in Church of England cemetery, Salisbury, where his wife Susannah Sarah was later buried on March 31st. 1905.?? The grave and headstone were in excellent condition in 1977.

Richard John Loveday left his wife Susannah, 6 sons and 5 daughters

Whatever, I?m glad you?re here, and invite you to wander around and explore all you want.

Whether it?s about the man with the wooden leg who started a fire, advertisements claiming their product can cure everything from a cough to a arthritis to baldness, or more serious subjects relating to long forgotten obituaries, or politics of the time, each gives a unique view into our history.? I will be attempting to capture some of that here, in this blog.? Should be fun to see what we can discover!

As we were cleaning out some of my grandparents? (maternal) things a few months ago I found several cigar boxes packed full of letters. They turned out to be letters that my grandfather had written to my grandmother and they spanned from 1932 to 1952. They were high school sweethearts but went to different colleges and many of the letters were during that separation. My grandfather?s work took him away from home often later on and the rest of the letters cover that time period.

I started this blog to share them and to eventually be able to turn them into a book for relevant family members. My grandfather passed away ten years ago and my grandmother about three years ago. This is a really special way to get to know a part of their lives that I wasn?t around for.

I am a twenty-something recent graduate with a passion for genealogy. I grew up learning about and loving genealogy, and I started my own family history research more than two years ago. My research is focused primarily in New England and Qu?bec.

Ever since I was a kid, I?ve had a fascination with genealogy and family history. I was the 10-year-old who went on family vacations to places like Gettysburg and Plymouth. For a long time I was content listening to my dad?s theories and latest research, but I was also incredibly excited to help out whenever I could.

Just over two years ago I began my own family history quest. I?m fortunate enough to still have both of my parents around as resources, but I?ve primarily been blazing my own research path. School kept me busy for a while, but I have a lot more time now to dedicate to genealogy and blogging.

By starting this blog, I hope to share both my personal family history knowledge and research skills with other members of the genealogy community while learning new tricks and meeting new people along the way.

Welcome to Reaching the Heartwood!

Please don?t hesitate to send me your photos, stories, and suggestions.

If you are interested in seeing the Cooper-Bird-Sauls-Thorp & Associated Families Tree on Ancestry.com, send me an email and I will make you a member so you can see the living people.
