Rajon Rondo Scores 44, But Celtics Fall To Heat In Game 2 Overtime Thriller (VIDEO)

MIAMI -- Rajon Rondo played every second for the Boston Celtics. Made just about every play. Made just about every shot, too.

His final numbers: a career-high 44 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds.

And somehow, even a night like that wasn't enough to beat the Miami Heat.

LeBron James scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Dwyane Wade scored eight of his 23 points in the extra session and the Heat rallied from 15 down to beat the Celtics 115-111 on Wednesday night ? taking a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals by pulling off the biggest comeback in franchise postseason history.

"There's no turning back. It's the conference finals," Rondo said. "I wanted to play every minute. I thought I didn't hurt my team by me playing every minute. I wanted to go out there and continue to do my best for my team."

That he did, shooting 16 of 24 from the floor, 10 of 12 from the foul line and making both his 3-point tries. Boston scored 12 points in overtime and Rondo had every one, giving his team the lead on three possessions before the Heat found a way to finally escape.

"Rondo was absolutely amazing," James said. "The performance he put on tonight will go down in the record books."

The Heat expected Boston's best ? and the Celtics didn't disappoint, yet still head home for Game 3 on Friday night facing a deficit no Boston team has been able to successfully overcome in a series since 1969.

"Listen, we played terrific," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I told them, we played extremely hard. I thought we played with great heart tonight, but I didn't think we played smart all the time. And there's things we can absolutely fix, and we'll do that. We'll be ready for Friday."

Mario Chalmers scored 22 for the Heat, who took 47 free throws ? 24 by James ? to Boston's 29.

"This group had resolve," Wade said of the Celtics. "They came out and played a great game. It was physical early. They brought the game to us. That can't happen. We used our crowd and the energy to get back into the game and we had to play better."

Paul Pierce scored 21 points, Kevin Garnett added 18 and Ray Allen 13 for Boston.

Rondo shrugged off his night.

"We lost," Rondo said. "Simple as that."

Allen's 3-pointer with 34.3 seconds left tied the game at 99-all. James missed two shots, first a layup ? he got the rebound of his own miss ? and then a jumper on the final possession of regulation, and to overtime they went.

"We had to do it the tough way," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

The Heat had come back to win from 14 points down in playoff games twice before, first in Game 6 of the 2006 NBA finals ? their title clincher ? and again last season against Philadelphia.

And this one was slipping away, more than once. James missed two free throws 21 seconds into overtime, and Miami looked in trouble, especially since Rondo was simply taking over.

When Rondo missed a layup ? he thought he was fouled, and the Celtics agreed ? with 1:33 left, Miami took advantage, with Udonis Haslem getting a dunk to put the Heat up 105-103. And after a turnover on the next Boston possession, Wade drove the lane, hit the deck and watched as his layup bounced on the rim and dropped through.

Garnett stood over Wade and glared, to no avail. Wade hit the free throw, and Miami was up 110-105 with 59.7 seconds left. By then, the no-call on Rondo had the Celtics seething.

"It was obvious," Rondo said.

Added Allen: "We all thought he got hit. I'll say it. He did, but what can you do about it?"

Miami was down by 15 in the first half and by as many as 11 in the third quarter, before a pair of 3-pointers by James started a comeback. Wade made consecutive jumpers midway through the third to shake off a slow start to his night and get the Heat within three both times, and the 2006 NBA finals MVP set up Haslem for a three-point play with 2:55 left that gave Miami its first lead since the opening minutes, 73-71.

As Haslem's shot dropped, Wade spun at midcourt and punched the air. More highlights followed.

Miami's lead got to as much as seven in the third after James blocked Pierce's shot near the rim, sending the ball high into the air and starting a sequence that was capped by a three-point play from Wade, pushing the margin to 78-71. It capped a 12-0 run for the Heat, who took an 81-75 lead into the fourth.

It was the fifth straight game where Miami outscored its opponent by double-digits in the third quarter. In each of the previous four of those outings, Miami never trailed in the final period.

That streak ended in this one.

"It's been very key for us, whether we're up, whether we're down, to win that quarter," Wade said. "But in the fourth quarter, even when we were down, we felt like we were close enough. ... We never felt like we were out of it."

They weren't out of it ? but a call that Boston argued against played a big role in the Celtics getting the lead back.

James stole the ball from Rondo early in the fourth, drove down the court and got wrapped up by Mickael Pietrus, who was assessed a clear-path foul, meaning Miami got two free throws and the ball. James missed both foul shots, Mike Miller missed a 3-point attempt later in the possession, and the lead stayed at 85-81.

Barely a minute later, it was gone. Pietrus hit a 3-pointer, Rondo followed with a steal and layup and Boston led 86-85. The Celtics led by five with 3:50 left after a jumper by Pierce, and the Celtics looked to be in control.

It was temporary. The Heat scored the next nine points, Haslem's jumper with 1:08 remaining put Miami up 98-94. So of course, back came Boston ? Allen's 3-pointer tying the game a few moments after Pierce fouled out.

"One of the best games I've played in, win or lose," Heat forward Shane Battier said. "It's easier said when you win ? but it's unbelievable."

So was Rondo.

NOTES: Celtics F Greg Stiemsma had four fouls in the first quarter, the first NBA player to do that since 2009. ... Rondo's only other 22-point first half was Feb. 22, 2009 at Phoenix. ... Allen, considered one of the game's absolute best shooters for many years, said he's been getting plenty of unsolicited advice lately on how to get rolling again. "I've only been doing this for 20 years," Allen said at the morning shootaround.

Gluten Free At The Spa ? Cc Gluten Freed

After four grueling years at UC Berkeley, I have finished my degree in Public Health.? My reward?? A relaxing vacation at the spa, Rancho La Puerta.? Located in Tecate, Mexico, this spa focuses on fitness, wellness and nutrition. Being gluten free makes total relaxation difficult to achieve even when at a spa.? Overall, I loved my experience at the Ranch and took home some interesting insights that I hope will improve my gluten free experience.

Insight #1 Constant Vigilance

Although I often write about the importance of focus and effort when it comes to being gluten free eg reading labels on products you?ve bought a thousand times or asking about cross-contamination even when you think the dish is safe, I thought that a place committed to health with a focus on food might be an exception. I thought I could drop my guard. What I found at Rancho La Puerta is that this is simply not the case.

While at the Ranch, I saw a poster advertising their ?Gluten Free Thursday? cooking class.? Here is what happened:

The cooking classes at the spa are usually taught by their Executive Chef, Denise Roa. However, once a week the spa invites guest chefs to teach.? This week, on Gluten Free Thursday, the spa had invited Romney Steele aka Nani, the granddaughter of the founders of the restaurant Nepenthe in Big Sur, California.? The cooking class was set up so that groups of two spa guests would make one dish using a recipe provided by Nani.

I was working with my Aunt Celia on a baked Sea Bass dish with an orange and tarragon relish.? The menu was out of this world.? All of the ingredients were picked fresh from the Ranch?s vegetable garden.? In fact, before starting the class, the spa guests had to go pick (literally) their ingredients from the garden.

The cooking school?s main classroom

All of the recipes were gluten free and things went smoothly for the most part until we encountered a problem: Nani included a recipe for a pea puree that needed some form of chip/starch-medium to eat.? Because this was overlooked when preparing the class, Nani asked one of the workers to go grab some pita bread from the back for the dish.? See the problem?

If someone had blindly accepted the sign on the door saying ?Gluten Free Thursday? they might not even think to ask if the pita bread was gluten free.? My Aunt and I quickly noticed and spoke to Nani about the gluten situation to which she replied ?Well, you don?t have to eat that dish.?? Despite this discouragement, the Executive Chef, Denise, was horrified at the lapse in gluten free practice and grabbed and grilled some corn tortillas to replace the pita bread.

I don?t usually post recipes but two of the GF dishes we made were simply too good not to post.? If interested in some of the recipes I cooked during this class click here for the Quinoa with Cumber and Mint recipe and for the roasted Sea Bass with Orange-Tarragon Relish recipe.

The take away point? Even when places advertise something as gluten free remain vigilant.

Insight #2 Simple Healthful Foods Are The Way To Go

I have read this advice on many blogs, pamphlets, books and websites but I never really understood it.? Ordering simple, healthful dishes can make being gluten free a lot simpler.?? At the Ranch, I found that this was absolutely true. Why is it not until now that I experienced the ease that accompanies simply prepared meals?? Simple foods are hard to find at restaurants!

At the spa every dish was made with ingredients found in their gardens or grown within a 30 mile radius of the Ranch.? When you looked at the meal, you could tell what components made up the dish.? Of course, you should always check about sauces and ingredients but I noticed that dishes that are truly simple and truly healthful aren?t muddled with questionable ingredients.? The Beet and Basil Salad was a salad made up of?well, beets and basil.? The extravagant, calorie-laden entrees that you find at most restaurants make being gluten free so complicated!? If I saw ??Carrot Soup? on a menu at most restaurants, I would not order it.? It may have flour as a thickener, contain malt vinegar or come garnished with fried onion crisps. At the Ranch, I knew the Carrot Soup was made of carrots and more carrots.

Beet soup served at the ranch with a fresh flower from the garden as garnish

I haven?t quite worked out how to use my new insight about simple, healthful foods to improve my gluten free lifestyle but when I do, I?ll be sure to post.? For now, I am simplifying the meals I make at home and trying to choose simple items at restaurants but still accompany my order with a long series of questions.

Insight #3 Apparently, Being Gluten Free Is Hard, So Be Nice To Yourself!

Rancho La Puerta is a spa dedicated to health and fitness. The spa?s clientele are hyper-aware of their diets and have strict exercise regimes.? These people demonstrate the type of dietary discipline I can only dream of.? They eat only what they need. In other words, teeny tiny portions.? They limit their sugar intake, their meat consumption and their dairy consumption.? They exercise every day and, when given the choice, choose the salad entr?e over the hamburger with fries.

Despite the fact that I found their discipline incredible and something to aspire to, I overheard conversation after conversation about how people had ?tried to go gluten free but it was too hard.?? These insanely disciplined and professionally successful people admitted that being gluten free was too much of a challenge!? One woman said ?I felt so great after that month but I just couldn?t keep it up.?

View of Villa Sol 2, my room at the ranch

It was so nice and refreshing to hear other people commenting about the difficulty of being gluten free.? It is a thankless job, demanding self-discipline, constant vigilance, intelligence and the ability to not only articulate your needs effectively but to advocate for your health in the face of constant obstacles.? It is funny but talking to the health nuts at the spa about the gluten free diet made me kind of proud that I am gluten free.

Take away point? Every now and then, take a moment to appreciate yourself and all the work you put in to being gluten free.? Most people don?t know how much effort it takes to truly be GF.? Just remember to be kind to yourself and be proud of the fact that you are gluten free.

Although I couldn?t help but think about my blog while at the spa, I did manage to relax and decompress from four tough years at UC Berkeley.? I hope to bring my insights from the spa home with me by practicing constant vigilance, choosing simple healthful meals and appreciating my GF efforts and I hope that you do too!

OT- Organizational Tips - Adoption.com Forums

I'm probably a little OCD about organization...

but it sure keeps my stress levels down.

1. Everything has a place - if it doesn't then we don't need it!

2. I use rubbermaid bins under the kids beds - the girls have 1 for Barbies, 1 for polly pockets, 1 for dress up clothes, and 1 for Legos. The boys have them for nerf guns, cars, and kennex.

3. We keep out of season and size clothes in plastic bins stored in the tops of closets. I organize the bins based on size and season.

4. I have lots of linens (there are 9 of us, so 8 beds). Each set of linens get folded and put into the pillowcase of the set, then each set is stacked neatly in the linen closet.

5. We color code a lot as well. Each kid has his/her color for towels, washcloths, cups, etc. Somtimes it's hard to find 7 different colors of things, but we do it as much as we can.

6. All rooms are cleaned before going to bed - no exceptions! Then each morning they all make their beds before they leave their rooms. We started this with our bios when they were very young and from day 1 with our fks.

7. Laundry gets started each night after baths and moved to the dryer before I go to bed. In the morning after breakfast we unload the dishwasher and fold/put away clothes.

8. Everyone helps with the household chores. We clean the kitchen/breakfast room as a family each night after dinner. Then once a week we clean everything - dust, bathrooms, floors, ect.

9. Mail gets taken care of when it enters the house. Bills paid, junk mail thrown out, magazines put in the proper place. I don't keep old magazines more than 2 months. I will cut out any article or ideas I want to keep and file accordingly.

10. I don't overbuy for clothes or toys. I used to, but realize they don't really need or want all that. They do want me to take them to the park, swimming, or play games with them. But see #2, they have a lot.

11. Don't take hand me downs you won't use. Or take them and offer to pass along anything you don't need.

12. I use Tupperware's modular mates in my kitchen. Each one has a specific purpose and they keep my pantry and cabinets very neat and organized. I have collected these for years and still would take more. Not sure when I will have all I want.

13. Cleaning supplies are kept on all levels of the house. I keep what I need on each floor. So each level has windex wipes, clorox wipes, toilet bowl cleaner, shower cleaner, dusters, etc. There is only 1 vacuum, mop and broom. Those I have to carry up and down the stairs. I also spend more to get whatever comes in wipes for ease and convenience. Just a little quicker to accomplish those chores when I don't have to have rags or paper towels to complete the job.

I use lots of baskets and bins everywhere.

We are a busy household - lots of sports, music lessons, church activities, 2 different schools, plus homeschooling. We have found that if/when everyone picks up after themselves it really isn't that difficult to keep things clean, neat, and organized.

Our house has been on the market and no one can believe how clean and neat we keep the house with 7 kids living here.

A couple of other things - when my kids were younger I have one of those mesh bags with suction cups to keep bath toys in. I just kept it attached to the back wall of the tub. Never collected more bath toys then would fit in the bag. Picking up was a game as soon as they were old enough to walk and hold a toy. We use a lot of open baskets/bins so there aren't lids to get in the way.

Powerful 'Flame' cyber weapon found in Middle East

Security experts have discovered a highly sophisticated computer virus in Iran and other Middle East countries that they believe was deployed at least five years ago to engage in state-sponsored cyber espionage.

Evidence suggest that the virus, dubbed "Flame," may have been built on behalf of the same nation or nations that commissioned the Stuxnet worm that attacked Iran's nuclear program in 2010, according to Kaspersky Lab, the Russian cyber security software maker that claimed responsibility for discovering the virus.

Kaspersky researchers said on Monday they have yet to determine whether Flame had a specific mission like Stuxnet, and declined to say who they think built it.

Iran has accused the United States and Israel of deploying Stuxnet.

Cyber security experts said the discovery publicly demonstrates what experts privy to classified information have long known: that nations have been using pieces of malicious computer code as weapons to promote their security interests for several years.

"This is one of many, many campaigns that happen all the time and never make it into the public domain," said Alexander Klimburg, a cyber security expert at the Austrian Institute for International Affairs.

A cyber security agency in Iran said on its English website that Flame bore a "close relation" to Stuxnet, the notorious computer worm that attacked that country's nuclear program in 2010 and is the first publicly known example of a cyber weapon.

Iran's National Computer Emergency Response Team also said Flame might be linked to recent cyber attacks that officials in Tehran have said were responsible for massive data losses on some Iranian computer systems.

Kaspersky Lab said it discovered Flame after a U.N. telecommunications agency asked it to analyze data on malicious software across the Middle East in search of the data-wiping virus reported by Iran.

Stuxnet connection
Experts at Kaspersky Lab and Hungary's Laboratory of Cryptography and System Security who have spent weeks studying Flame said they have yet to find any evidence that it can attack infrastructure, delete data or inflict other physical damage.

Yet they said they are in the early stages of their investigations and that they may discover other purposes beyond data theft. It took researchers months to determine the key mysteries behind Stuxnet, including the purpose of modules used to attack a uranium enrichment facility at Natanz, Iran.

"Their initial research suggest that this was probably written by the authors of Stuxnet for covert intelligence collection," said John Bumgarner, a cyber warfare expert with the non-profit U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit think tank.

Flame appears poised to go down in history as the third major cyber weapon uncovered after Stuxnet and its data-stealing cousin Duqu, named after the Star Wars villain.

The Moscow-based company is controlled by Russian malware researcher Eugene Kaspersky. It gained notoriety after solving several mysteries surrounding Stuxnet and Duqu.

Their research shows the largest number of infected machines are in Iran, followed by Israel and the Palestinian territories, then Sudan and Syria.

The virus contains about 20 times as much code as Stuxnet, which caused centrifuges to fail at the Iranian enrichment facility it attacked. It has about 100 times as much code as a typical virus designed to steal financial information, said Kaspersky Lab senior researcher Roel Schouwenberg.

Gathering data
Flame can gather data files, remotely change settings on computers, turn on PC microphones to record conversations, take screen shots and log instant messaging chats.

Kaspersky Lab said Flame and Stuxnet appear to infect machines by exploiting the same flaw in the Windows operating system and that both viruses employ a similar way of spreading.

That means the teams that built Stuxnet and Duqu might have had access to the same technology as the team that built Flame, Schouwenberg said.

He said that a nation state would have the capability to build such a sophisticated tool, but declined to comment on which countries might do so.

The question of who built flame is sure to become a hot topic in the security community as well as the diplomatic world.

There is some controversy over who was behind Stuxnet and Duqu. Some experts suspect the United States and Israel, a view that was laid out in a January 2011 New York Times report that said it came from a joint program begun around 2004 to undermine what they say are Iran's efforts to build a bomb.

The U.S. Defense Department, CIA, State Department, National Security Agency, and U.S. Cyber Command declined to comment.

Hungarian researcher Boldizsar Bencsath, whose Laboratory of Cryptography and Systems Security first discovered Duqu, said his analysis shows that Flame may have been active for at least five years and perhaps eight years or more.

That implies it was active long before Stuxnet.

"It's huge and overly complex, which makes me think it's a first-generation data gathering tool," said Neil Fisher, vice president for global security solutions at Unisys Corp. "We are going to find more of these things over time."

Others said that cyber weapons technology has inevitably advanced since Flame was built.

"The scary thing for me is: if this is what they were capable of five years ago, I can only think what they are developing now," Mohan Koo, managing director of British-based Dtex Systems cyber security company.

Some experts speculated that the discovery of the virus may have dealt a psychological blow to its victims, on top of whatever damage Flame may have already inflicted to their computers.

"If a government initiated the attack it might not care that the attack was discovered," said Klimburg of the Austrian Institute for International Affairs. "The psychological effect of the penetration could be nearly as profitable as the intelligence gathered."

Panetta: Asia is the 'project' for new Navy grads

(AP) ? The Pentagon chief said Tuesday building U.S. maritime strength across the Asia-Pacific region will be one of the main projects for the new generation of America's naval officers.

Speaking to graduates at the U.S. Naval Academy, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the U.S. is returning to its maritime roots.

"One of the key projects that your generation will have to face is sustaining and enhancing American strength across the great maritime region of the Pacific," he said.

He told graduates that their work will help strengthen defense ties with China, modernize ties with old allies like Japan and Korea and build new partnerships with countries like Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore.

"America's future prosperity and security are tied to our ability to advance peace and security along the arc extending from the Western Pacific and East Asia into the Indian Ocean and South Asia," Panetta said. "That reality is inescapable for our country and for our military, which has already begun broadening and deepening our engagement throughout the Asia Pacific."

Panetta said the Navy and Marine Corps must lead a resurgence of American maritime presence and power in the Asia-Pacific region and around the world.

" We must be prepared to confront any challenge, but the key to that region is going to be to develop a new era of defense cooperation between our countries, one in which our military shares security burdens in order to advance peace in Asia Pacific and around the world," Panetta said.

Panetta also said the military will protect its investments in cybersecurity, unmanned systems and special operation forces.

"We will ensure our military can confront aggression and defeat any opponent anytime, anywhere," Panetta said.

The Pentagon chief said he departs on Wednesday for Southeast Asia, and he noted he will visit China later this year for the first time as secretary of defense.

"I will tell all of these nations that the United States will remain a Pacific power, and I will tell them why ? because of you ? because during your careers many of you will be headed to the Pacific," he said.

There were a total of 1,099 graduates, including 877 men and 222 women. A total of 810 were commissioned as naval officers, including 634 men and 176 women. There were 267 commissioned as officers in the Marine Corps, including 224 men and 43 women. Several graduated as officers in the Air Force and Coast Guard.

Panetta also noted the death last week of retired Lt. Cmdr. Wesley Brown, the first African-American to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1949. He was 85.

The defense secretary cited the academy's diversity, and he noted that some students are gay. This was the first graduating class at the service academy in which gay students could be open about their sexuality after repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy in September.

"You are men and women from every state in the union and 12 foreign nations ? rich and poor, secular and religious, black, white, Latino, Native American, Asian, straight and gay. Diversity of this class is a tribute to the life and service of retired Lt. Cmdr. Wesley Brown," Panetta said, bringing cheers and applause from the audience.

Market index funds are a collection of stocks just like ETF funds, but they are not prepackaged. New stock market investors may need brokers to shop for individual stocks. Venus wins on return to Grand Slam tennis

(AP) ? Just playing at this year's French Open was an accomplishment for Venus Williams. Winning was a bonus.

Williams played at a major tournament for the first time since last August, when she withdrew before her second-round match at the U.S. Open. It was then that she revealed that she had been diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome, a condition that can cause fatigue and joint pain.

It didn't slow her down in the last two sets Sunday. The seven-time Grand Slam champion recovered from a poor start and beat 19-year-old Paula Ormaechea of Argentina 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to reach the second round.

"I just learned how to live with this. It's different. I have a lot to learn still," Williams said. "I learned how to just ? just learning. So I think that's my biggest challenge. I learn a lot every week, especially having to play a professional sport.

"So that's a challenge, just learning to live."

Williams was one of six major champions that advanced on the opening day of the clay-court tournament. The only one that lost was Andy Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open winner.

On Monday, top-ranked Novak Djokovic and 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer will be on court. In the women's draw, No. 1 Victoria Azarenka and defending champion Li Na are scheduled to play.

Williams was last up in the main stadium, Court Philippe Chatrier, and she didn't get off to a good start.

Although Williams is the one with the fast serve and the pounding groundstrokes, it was Ormaechea that was on the offensive. The strategy worked, for a while.

"She played super well the first set," Williams said. "I think she really did a lot of the right things, and I have to congratulate her on the first set, and thankfully the next two sets were better for me."

Still, Williams had trouble on her serve in the final set, getting broken twice while winning four times on Ormaechea's serve.

"I wasn't able to get a foothold," Williams said. "She had some good returns. And so I had to give those to her, but I felt like I was returning well finally in the third."

U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur and former French Open winners Svetlana Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic also advanced to the second round.

The sixth-seeded Stosur, who lost in the 2010 French Open final, was first up on Court Philippe Chatrier. She beat Elena Baltacha of Britain 6-4, 6-0.

"It's a bit of an early start, but always nice to get through it now," the Australian said. "You have the whole day and whatever else to recover and, yeah, enjoy."

Kuznetsova won the French Open title in 2009 and the U.S. Open in 2004 but is seeded No. 26 this year. She defeated Mirjana Lucic of Croatia 6-1, 6-3. Ivanovic, the 2008 champion at Roland Garros, beat Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain 6-1, 6-1.

For the men, 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro beat Albert Montanes 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-1. The ninth-seeded Argentine played with tape on his knee early in the match, and then added a wrap after a massage from a trainer following the second set.

"It's a problem when you can't find your balance like you're used to, but I'll use these few days of rest to get better," Del Potro said. "If I go on the court, it's because I feel good. I want to continue playing."

Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, beat Jonathan Dasnieres de Veigy of France 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. The 32-year-old Spaniard is one of 37 men in this year's draw that is 30 or older, an Open era record for Grand Slam tournaments.

"I saw myself in the mirror, and when I walk on the court I don't think about whether I'm younger or older. The only thing I try to do is play well," Ferrero said. "And I'm at Roland Garros, and the idea is to play well today."

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the highest-seeded player in action on Sunday at No. 5, also advanced. The Frenchman defeated Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

After Tsonga wrapped up his victory, it was time for Williams to get on court. And although she made it through to the next round, many are still wondering how long her game can last.

"Oh, I already know I can play. That's not a doubt," Williams said. "Everything else is up in the air."

Discovery expected to shift research direction in lupus and asthma

ScienceDaily (May 27, 2012) ? Newfound details of the immune system suggest a role for never-before-considered drug classes in the treatment of allergic and autoimmune diseases, according to a University of Alabama at Birmingham study published online May 27 in Nature Immunology.

The results advance the current understanding of the way the body's initial, vague reaction to any invading organism expands into a precise and massive counterattack. That expansion starts when a dendritic cell "swallows" a piece of any invader encountered, ferries it to the nearest lymph node and presents it there for notice by lymphocytes, the workhorse cells of the immune system.

According to the current model, dendritic cells first must encounter T lymphocytes in the paracortex, or T cell zone, within the node. Only there will the interaction enable lymphocytes to expand into an army of clones primed to attack the invader.

To the research team's great surprise, the data showed that, although immune response works this way during viral flu infections, it is not always the case. When the body is infested with parasitic worms, for instance, dendritic cells link with T cells near B lymphocytes, under the control of B cell-related signals and outside the T cell zone.

"Considering that diseases from asthma to lupus can occur because the system mistakenly ramps up the same types of T cell responses it normally uses against worms, our finding that B lymphocytes control the T cell/dendritic cell interactions that trigger such responses has important, practical implications," said Frances Lund, Ph.D., chair of the UAB School of Medicine's Department of Microbiology and corresponding author. "The field now has cause to look at several experimental and existing drugs known to interrupt B cell signals as potential treatments for diseases driven by T cells."

Study details

Before joining UAB in March 2012, Lund worked alongside Tim Mosmann, Ph.D., at the University of Rochester Medical Center. In 1986 Mosmann advanced his groundbreaking theory on the way the immune system decides which sets of immune cells are most effective against different invader types. According to his Th1/Th2 model, Th1 T helper cells were best against viruses because they helped invaded human cells self-destruct before viruses could turn them into virus factories. Th2 helper T cells were best against parasites because they helped the B cells mass produce antibodies that glommed onto and removed worms from the spaces between cells.

The current study found that B cells, as part of the Th2 response to worms, start pumping out a protein called lymphotoxin, which in turn signals nearby stromal cells to produce more of the chemokine CXCL13.

B cells are able to gather in B cell areas of lymph nodes in the first place because they express CXCR5 receptor proteins that sense and move toward higher concentrations of CXCL13. The team discovered that a set of dendritic cells also begins expressing CXCR5 during a worm infection.

With B cells and activated dendritic cells gathered near B cells, T helper cells next must join the party if the immune response is to expand. While T cells dump into lymph nodes at many points, only those that happen to enter near B cells, and to bump into CXCR5-expressing dendritic cells, drive the response to worms forward, according to the authors.

The authors also believe such interactions trap T cells near the B cell area and that proximity determines the kind of cells they becomes next. Those receiving the strongest signals become the T helper follicular cells that B cells must partner with to produce antibodies specific to the current pathogen. Those getting weaker signals become Th2 effectors that travel back to the infection site to cause the histamine release and intestinal muscle contractions that help to expel worms.

Though vital to effective immune responses to worms, T helper follicular cells and Th2 cells have a dark side. For example, T helper follicular cells in some cases inappropriately help B cells produce high affinity "auto" antibodies that recognize the body's own cells as foreign and can destroy the kidneys of lupus patients and the joints of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

In other cases, Th2 cells respond to allergens in the lung like house dust mites because the mites look like worms to the immune system and the confused Th2 cells respond to the allergen as they would to a worm. This mistaken recognition causes histamine release and bronchoconstriction in the lungs, two of the major clinical symptoms of asthma.

"We know of experimental biologics that interrupt the ability of B cells to give off lymphotoxin and prevent the development of helper Th2 cells and T helper follicular cells," Lund said. "Could such antibody-based treatments be useful against some autoimmune diseases and asthma? We think so, but time and further studies will tell."

Along with Lund, Troy Randall, Ph.D., the Claude Bennett Scholar in the UAB Department of Medicine's Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, and UAB post-docs Beatriz Le?n, Ph.D., and Andr? Ballesteros-Tato, Ph.D., made major contributions to the work. Also making important contributions were Jeffrey Browning at Biogen Idec and Robert Dunn at the Pfizer Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (formerly at Biogen Idec). The study was supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Tribute Paid To Steve Jobs In Pixar?s Film ?Brave?

Steve Jobs has been an icon and an inspiration for a lot of people. While he has been criticized often too, Jobs undoubtedly was a living embodiment of a man who struggled and began from nothing, eventually becoming one of the most important people in the world. Jobs was the co-founder of Pixar studios too, a company he founded after he initially left Apple. Now Pixar has decided to present a tribute to its mentor.

Jobs was definitely extraordinary when it came to creative ideas. And that is how he shaped Pixar, producing some of the most excellent animation movies. So in more than one ways, Jobs was the mentor and inspiration at Pixar, besides having served as CEO at the company.

Pixar?s movie ?Brave? is expected to arrive on June 22. The movie is about a girl in Scotland who ventures out, trying to find her place in the world. In the movie, it is shown that certain ghostly creatures, named will-o?-the-wisps lead people to their respective destinies. In some way, even the story bears resemblance to that of Jobs.

At the end of the movie, when showing credits, a will-o?-the-wisps flits around Steve Jobs? name. The movie is dedicated to him and it is being said that Jobs overlook the movie and provided feedback over an early cut of the movie. Naturally, Pixas owes a lot to Jobs and this make for a befitting tribute to the great man.

Memorial Cup: London Knights, Shawinigan Cataractes on collision course

SHAWINIGAN - The London Knights and the Shawinigan Cataractes will be coming from opposite directions when they collide in the final of the Mastercard Memorial Cup.

The Ontario Hockey League champion Knights have been off since Tuesday, as they clinched a bye to the final by finishing first in the round robin portion of the four-team tournament.

The host Cataractes took the long route, finishing last in the round robin but then winning the tiebreaker game against the Western Hockey League-winning Edmonton Oil Kings and dethroning the defending champion Saint John Sea Dogs in the semifinal.

The Knights (2-1) and Cataractes (3-2) will clash Sunday night in the final amid the clamour of the raucous Shawinigan fans at the Bionest Centre.

The question to be answered is whether the Knights have the advantage of being rested or the Cataractes are favoured for taking momentum into the decisive game.

"I guess we'll have to wait and see," was all Cataractes defenceman Morgan Ellis would say.

The main advantage could be home ice, where a veteran Shawinigan side seems to feed off the deafening noise, which may be intimidating for a mostly younger London team.

"The buildings' always really loud and it definitely helps," said Shawinigan rearguard Brandon Gormley, the Phoenix Coyotes' prospect who has been one of the stars of the tournament with nine points in five games.

The Cataractes also have confidence from having handed London its only loss of the tournament, a 6-2 thrashing on May 20 in which Gormley had two goals and an assist.

"We'll have to play good defence and we need our forwards playing good sound hockey and our goalie playing well," said Knights coach Mark Hunter.

The Knights have succeeded with a defence-first game and strong counterattacking from top forwards like Seth Griffith and Vladislav Namestnikov.

Their specialty is shot blocking, particularly from veteran centre Austin Watson - who is also their scoring leader thus far with four points in three games - and the top defence duo of Jarred Tinordi and Scott Harrington. Watson's linemates, the pesky twins Matt and Ryan Rupert, should also be a factor.

A problem is that Shawinigan's defence aces, Ellis and Gormley, have been particularly effective at getting shots through to the net for forwards to tip in or score on rebounds. Both prefer the well-placed wrist shot to the big slapper from the point.

"It's so hard to score in today's game," Gormley said. "Guys are blocking shots and collapsing down low.

"Any way we can get pucks to the net and keep them in at the blue-line, it benefits our forwards."

The game-winner that sank the Sea Dogs on Friday night was a case in point, as Ellis slipped a shot through that Yannick Veilleux tipped past goalie Mathieu Corbeil to break a 4-4 tie.

It was the Cataractes third game in as many nights and dispelled any notion that fatigue would be a factor.

Hunter welcomed the break because his team had been through a long season and playoff drive that culminated with their victory in five games over Niagara in the OHL final.

Shawinigan finished second to Saint John in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League regular season, but then were upset in seven games in the second round by Chicoutimi. That left them a 31-day break before the Memorial Cup, although they didn't sit idle.

Coach Eric Veilleux put his team through a punishing schedule of practices and off-ice workouts to get them into top shape in body and mind.

"We had a chance to talk during that month," said Veilleux. "Many things were addressed.

"When you go through adversity, you pretty much know the reasons why. I don't want to call it an accident, but we lost Game 7, which we weren't really planning on. The right things were said. You find solutions. They were clearly understood before this tournament and that's what we're seeing right now."

Now Shawinigan has a chance to be only the second team to win the Memorial Cup after having to play in a tiebreaker game. The first was also in Quebec in 2009 in Rimouski, where the Windsor Spitfires lost their first two games and then ran the table.

The final will be Shawinigan's fourth game in five nights and their sixth in 10. It will be London's fourth in 10 days.

"They look prepared, physically and mentally," said Hunter. "They're an older team, not depending on 17-year-olds. That helps."

Another factor is goaltending, where Shawinigan veteran Gabriel Girard has been solid while London's Michael Houser has been surprisingly off his game. Girard has been the starter since the Cataractes' second game after Alex Dubeau got the loss in the tournament opener against Edmonton.

He has posted a 2.50 goals-against average and .917 save percentage in four starts.

Houser was named the outstanding player of the OHL this season after tying a league record with 46 wins and posting a 2.47 average. But at the Memorial Cup, he has let in some soft ones. His average is 3.03 and his save percentage a weak .885.

But history favours London.

The Cataractes are a founding member of the QMJHL but have never won a Memorial Cup. The Knights are seeking their second in seven years, both with brothers Dale and Mark Hunter running the club.

They had a veteran, star-studded team in 2005 that included winger Corey Perry and won the event on home ice.

Dale Hunter was the coach then with Mark as general manager, but the roles are reversed after Dale took time out to coach the Washington Capitals this season.

Mark said the brothers have evolved since their first title.

"We're calmer than we were then," he said. "We know it won't help them if we're too wound up.

"They have to do it on the ice. We're just here to help them along. We don't want them too tight. It's going to be a game with a lot of emotion. And too much emotion is no good either."

Do You Realize These Insightful Strategies For Affiliate Revenue ...

If you?re interested in building or expanding a web-based income, an affiliate marketing program can be a great choice. Generally, affiliate marketing programs are free to join; you earn money by promoting their products on your website. Here are some helpful tips to help you get started with affiliate marketing.

If you want to make good money with affiliate marketing, you must learn to be patient. Affiliate revenue builds up slowly over time. As long as you have active referral links in your old posts, they may help you make profits in the future. Affiliate programs are not designed to make you get rich quick.

To make money with your affiliate marketing program you have to specialize. Offering automotive related products on your Internet marketing blog is not going to result in sales, but offering high quality products that your readers can use will. They came to your page for a specific reason, focus your efforts on the same reason.

Keep track by using your affiliate statistics of which days of the week, and even times of day, are best for posting new promotional articles. You?ll want to have a high readership with large conversion rates, so keep track and see if there are any specific times which work better than others.

If you become an affiliate marketer for a product that you have not personally tried, become knowledgeable about it, inside and out. You need to include examples of how the product has worked and possibly reviews of the product from others who have used it. Give your customers as much information as possible in order to make that sale.

When building affiliate links on your blog, don?t forget that you need traffic on your site first. If no one is reading your blog, there?s no one to click on your affiliate links, no matter how glowing your recommendation or well-place your advertisements. Build a readership for your blog and then join an affiliate program to take advantage of that traffic.

One tip to consider when considering article marketing is that you want to provide two links that lead back to your site at the end of your article. This is important for bringing potential customers to your site. These links should like to your main front page as well as a link that exists deep within the structure of your site.

Find out which ads are generating business. You can do this by using software designed to help you find this information. If an ad isn?t working out, then switch it up and use something different. Constant tweaking with affiliate advertising is important to help generate as much money as possible.

Using the product that you are interested in selling before becoming an affiliate marketer can be an invaluable experience. The experience of using the product will also give you ideas on how to market the product?s usefulness, particularly, what areas the product performs well in. It will also help you to identify whether it is a high quality product or a product that is not worth selling. If the product is not worth selling, don?t waste your time with that company. Many companies also offer a free trial period for their products, so make sure you take advantage of it when available.

To maximize the money you make from your affiliate marketing program make sure that you present your information cleanly. You want to focus on the content and the advertising, not distracting your readers with other items to focus on. Ask yourself if you need each component and get rid of the ones that do not make you money.

It?s true that your website should triumph on it?s own based on its appearance and your products and services. That said, you can take it further by marketing through affiliates. You can always improve upon your website, and hopefully these tips gave you advice on how to create a good affiliate marketing plan.
